Rather than waste time on a fancy looking GUI, AATranslator focuses on functionality and ease of use. I love it.ĪATranslator, pictured above, is utilitarian. Michael is a very friendly Australian man, who has continually improved and expanded AATranslator’s functionality, as well as personally fielded many of my questions and requests. This wonderful, wonderful program is developed by Michael Rooney of Suite Spot, and was originally created to allow him to send Adobe Audition (which sprung from the wildly popular Cool Edit Pro) sessions to a mixer using ProTools.
As a post house we need to be able to handle pretty much anything. And it is very important that we make collaborators and client’s lives easier, not harder. However, we often collaborate with other creatives (whether they are picture editors or other sound folks or musicians) who are using different DAWs or handing us files from NLEs. If we were only taking care of projects from start to finish in-house, this wouldn’t be a problem. It also doesn’t natively save project files that can be opened in “industry standard” DAWs such as ProTools.
However, REAPER doesn’t natively support importing many proprietary formats not written in plain text (I believe in part because of Cockos’ philosophy about programming and in part because of licensing costs that would have to be passed on to the consumer). The lead developer, Justin Frankel, also happens to be a little bit of a folk hero among sound nerds, musicians, and creatives for inventing Winamp, the Gnutella network, shoutCAST, and other important, influential, and empowering software.Ībove is a screenshot of all the different file types Reaper can import natively - and as much as I love the NLE from Magix, Vegas, it isn’t widely used by most of my clients in the US right now. As such, for over 10 years, we have been using Cockos REAPER as our main DAW because of its speed, flexibility, power, compatibility, compactness, affordability and continually evolving and improving feature set (among other things, REAPER was for a long time the only DAW that could appropriately handle ambisonics mixing and plugins for VR projects). Silver Sound, my boutique sound house in the FlatIron district of NYC, has made a name for itself in part because we go out of our way to have the very best sonic tools and solutions for any given task or project - whether they are “industry standard” or not. One of the great things about running your own shop is that you have complete control over the tools that you use. Cory Choy mixing a spot in REAPER for the Chicago Bulls in Silver Sound’s Studio A - AAtranslator, by allowing for OMF and AAF conversion, makes using Reaper for post production audio possible for professionals.
